Weight Loss Injections
Dear Patient,
We understand that some of you may be interested in weight loss injections, such as Saxenda®, Wegovy®, Ozempic®, or Mounjaro®. We’re writing to explain why these medications are not available on prescription from your GP.
These treatments are only available through a specialist NHS service called the Weight Management and Complex Obesity Service (WMCOS). This is because national NHS guidance requires that patients are carefully assessed by a team of experts—including doctors, dietitians, and psychologists—before starting treatment. GPs are not allowed to prescribe these medications for weight loss directly.
In our area (Suffolk and North East Essex), a community-based WMCOS service is being introduced to support patients with the highest medical need. Referrals and assessments are being phased in gradually across local clinics. At the moment, only patients who meet specific criteria set by NHS England will be considered for these treatments.
We appreciate that this may be disappointing, but these decisions are based on national safety guidelines and NHS rules about how weight loss treatments can be used.

Thank you for your understanding.
